A legacy of health training since 1963.
Formerly St John's College of Nursing and Midwifery, the Institute serves as the Health Training Arm of the Catholic Health Commission under the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu.

St. John’s Institute for Health (SJIFH) is one of 11 Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) member colleges, established in 1963 by the Medical Missionary of Mary Sisters. Operating under the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu, it serves as the Health Training Arm of the Catholic Health Commission. SJIFH focuses on advancing healthcare informatics, research, and innovation, aiming to bridge the gap between healthcare and technology.

Main Goal / Purpose In line with the goal of Mzuzu Diocese, the purpose of St John’s Institute is to produce professional health care workers for comprehensive Christ’s healing ministry Philosophy The philosophy of St. John’s Institute shall be compliant with Christian principles and particularly teaching of the Catholic Church regarding provision of health services.

Catholic Social Teaching St John’s Institute for Health was instituted in 1963 with an aim of training nurses for St. Johns Hospital in Mzuzu. Later on, it extended its intake to fit the growing need of health personnel in Mzuzu Diocese. This being the case, the college leadership thought of introducing some new courses like Certificate in Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy Assistants. In all these courses, Catholic Social Teaching is taught. This is done so that we instill in them the Christian values in them. The Catholic social teaching has a threefold mission: Announcing the truth about human dignity and human rights; Denouncing unjust situations in our societies; Contributing to positive changes in our societies and real human progress.
